Who We Are
University Arts Women's Club-University of Toronto Women's Association is the amalgamation of two clubs: UAWC founded in 1929, and UTWA founded in 1982. Membership in UAWC-UTWA is open to all current and former members of the University of Toronto community, as well as their spouses or partners, and friends who are recommended by UAWC-UTWA members. We provide friendly and informal occasions for members to meet and chat with one another bringing together members and their guests for a variety of lectures and other activities.
What Kind of Programme does UAWC-UTWA Offer?
Each year UAWC-UTWA holds three (or four) afternoon meetings; each of these features an interesting guest speaker. Planned for 2023-2024 are Ann Birch, historical fiction author focusing on early Upper Canada history; Katie Daubs, author of The Missing Millionaire The True Story of Ambrose Small and The City Obsessed With Finding Him; Lynn Slotkin, drama critic with an update on the 2024 Stratford and Shaw offerings; and architecture and planning specialist Mark Osbaldeston presenting 'Unbuilt U of T'.
Add to this a fall outing typically to a Faculty of Music opera performance; then a Christmas Party and perhaps a spring or summer outing to a gallery or museum or cultural event. And, to wrap up the year, we host the Club's Spring Luncheon and Annual General Meeting at The Faculty Club, University of Toronto, highlighted by an engaging guest speaker. This year Andrée-Ann Cyr, Associate Professor of Psychology will focus on Optimizing Learning and Memory as We Age.
What are UAWC-UTWA Interest Groups?
Members may join one or more interest groups which usually meet monthly. Current groups are: Antiques and Art Appreciation, Gourmet Lunch, Reading, Restaurant Lunch, and Theatre. New groups can be formed depending upon members' interests. Explore the world of ideas and some of Toronto's cultural offerings, all while in a convivial setting. Occasional guests who attend Interest Groups are most welcome. However, those attending regularly will be considered as members and asked to pay the annual membership fee.
How Does One Become a UAWC-UTWA Member?
Current annual dues are $75.00, and this includes three (or four) afternoon meetings, each with a presentation/guest speaker, and the option of participating in any of the Interest Groups. Guests (male and female) are welcome at our general meetings. For in-person meetings there is a charge of $15.00 each for non-members, which includes light refreshments and the presentation. There are additional charges for the Christmas Buffet Lunch, the Spring Luncheon and Annual General Meeting, and other special events held during the year. Guests are welcome.
